Purpose of the 8 Hour Anger Management Course

The eight-hour Adult Anger Management course is designed to offer a program of discipline to the individual offender.  It consists of self-evaluating topics and self-reflecting sessions focused on issues related to anger.  Its purpose is to decrease recidivism of first-time offenders as well as educate, equip, and inform those offenders that batter, abuse, and misuse anger with alternative ways of coping with, and expressing anger.  It serves as a sentencing alternative for the Judges in lieu of jail and/or prison time, or may be taken voluntarily.  The course cannot be utilized as a substitute for a 26-week Batterer’s Intervention Program for domestic violence cases.

Anger Management Goals:

The curriculum is designed to promote individual assessment, as well as encourage the offender to personally identify the core issues that serve as a contributing factor to his or her anger.  Our objective is to assist the offender in understanding how to cope, control, respond, and express anger in an appropriate manner.

Course Content:

  • Discuss cause, effect, and consequences of failure to manage anger.
  • Recognize, identify, and understand behaviors that contribute to anger, as well as identify core issues that promote anger.
  • Discuss impulse control and alternative behaviors.
  • Utilize anger management methods and techniques, planned responses, and assertive communication skills in managing anger using the D.E.S.K. method.
  • Identify and discuss domestic abuse and find alternative behavioral choices through discussion and role-play.
  • Apply stress management and problem-solving techniques to influence positive decision-making and functioning.
  • Identify pathways that intensify anger and pathways of resolving a conflict.
  • Identify and define positive behaviors and attitudes to promote productivity.
